Abstract

This project has been directed to show the wide range of possibilities that documentaries and newsreels offer as historical sources. Its particular topic is Madrid's cinematographic imagen between 1896 and 1936. The method that we propose is to follow both qualitative and quantitative studies. The main objective is (by using nearly thirty-four cinematographic documents) to find out the political, social, economical and cultural references that both documentaries and newsreels contain. These are the only sources we have to conform the visual image of the city's history. Movement, spontaneous attitudes, places, people, their interests, their actions... all was long ago filmed and will be now used to bring new points of view to historical investigation.
