Abstract

The central years of the 19th century are one of the most striking gaps in historiography on Asturian industrialization, since they constitute the point of departure for the process. In these pages we focus on the technical contributions of one of the mining engineers who worked in the region, the Belgian, Adolphe Desoignie, who contributed to the transfer of advanced technology between Europe and Asturias in this initial and decisive phase. For example, 180 years ago, he launched the first submarine mine documented in Europe. Despite this, like other contemporaries, it has not had the repercussion it deserves in the scientific literature.
