Abstract

This paper aims to be a contribution to the new historiography on social protest against Francoism. With it, is pursued the unraveling of the role played by the rural society in the emergence of sociability networks that foster democratic attitudes increasingly opposed to the dictatorial regime. Following in the footsteps of some recent works, throughout this study we analyze the work carried out by the Spanish Communist Party and the Agricultural and Peasant Workers Commissions in the reconstruction of the interpretative languages and political cultures of the agrarian reality under Francoism. The communists played a crucial role in the historical process of gestation of collective identities among the rural population, contributing to the sedimentation of pro-democratic civic attitudes and behaviors opposed to the dictatorship.
