Abstract

This paper delves into the research on public memory functions about Jacinto Ruiz, the diminished hero from the Dos de Mayo, expressed in two moments of the change of centuries: raising of its Madrilenian statue (1891) and the move of his mortal remains from Trujillo to Madrid (1909). Political purposefulness behind those commemorations, as well as the processes which lead to them and the individual representation of lieutenant Ruiz, will be the central aspect studied by the text. Additionally, the fitting of all those actions in the 19th century European “statue-mania” and the heroes and national events’ representations will serve as the widest framework for the present research. Role played by the press during the events will have a special treatment
