Abstract
The social and economic relevance of football has grown steadily over the last century, making it an influential agent in international relations. Football tournaments are a clear example of how sport, politics, economics, and the foreign policy of States converge around sport. An example of this issue is the 1982 FIFA World Cup in Spain. This important sporting event was an opportunity for the host country to show a modern and democratic image of Spain and, likewise, it became a decisive element in the decision-making process of other participating countries, such as the United Kingdom. Some internal and external British problems, such as hooliganism and the Falklands War, converged around the celebration of this mega-event, and they could affect the development of the championship and Spanish-British relations, with the Gibraltar dispute still to be resolved.
