Abstract
Arequipa has been characterized during the Republic for assuming Catholicism to defend its regional claims against the centralism and liberal tendencies that characterized the Peruvian capital. The aim of this paper is to determine the changes in the prospect that the catolic militants of this city have about party politics, between the founding of the first confessional party in the region in 1913 and the founding of the PPC in 1966, emerged of a split from the Christian Democracy. Through the analysis of the manifestos of these political parties, the documents produced by some of their adherents and the news of their activities in the city's Catholic newspaper (El Deber), this study focuses on the creation, organization and development of five political parties: El Partido Católico (1913), La Unión Popular (1931), FDN (1944), PDC (1955) and PPC (1966).
