Abstract

This article demonstrates how in the first decades of the Restoration, republican political culture managed to overcome the limitations it had in the public sphere through the circuits of production and dissemination of musical works. The adaptation of the works to different contexts of musical sociability and the constant modification of the contents based on current events fueled criticism of the political system of the Restoration. The popularity of republican symbols such as the La Marseillaise anthem increased and its meaning was renewed through the Clavé Choirs and the works of Zarzuela. The analysis of the musical repertoire of the Clavé Choirs and the intentionality of the Zarzuelas' performances and their reception demonstrates the continuity and transformation of the republican political culture of the Restoration.
