Abstract
The October revolution in Asturias (1934) has traditionally called the attention of researchers on the Spanish 2nd Republic, as it defied the government, led by the «radical-cedista» coalition (1934-1935). In addition, so-called «revisionist» historiography insists on the responsibility of UGT and the socialists, to blame them for the disorders,
to justify the army’s intervention, and to depict the latter’s coup in 1936 as unavoidable. In this article we aim at studying the revolution through the pages of La balada del norte, the
four-volume graphic novel by Asturian author Alfonso Zapico. We focus on historical processes, as well as on the representativeness of the characters, and on the literary sources that inspired Zapico, in order to assess the novel’s relevance to current historiographic debate, and to public perception of the events narrated.
