Resumen
El artículo estudia el rol de propagandista de Chile que tuvo Gabriela Mistral desde su cargo consular entre 1932 y 1957, y lo inserta dentro de la incipiente diplomacia pública y cultural del país. Entendiendo a Mistral como un “agente intermedio” de la propaganda exterior, se observa su relación con el Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores a partir de diversos aspectos: el nivel de iniciativa personal de Mistral en temas de propaganda cultural, su labor transfiriendo conocimientos sobre diplomacia cultural a sus superiores, y el margen de autonomía con el que se desempeñó. De este modo, se da a conocer tanto la labor individual de la poeta como el funcionamiento institucional de la propaganda exterior. Su caso sugiere que la diplomacia pública que desarrollaba el Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores estaba poco centralizada y fue impulsada en gran parte por los representantes de Chile en el exterior.
