Abstract
The author assesses the impact of the recession in the Basque Country, in terms of both unemployment and poverty. He considers that the crisis faced by the autonomous region has traits of its own. In this respect, the study insists on the mixed origins of job losses in the Basque Country, originally part of the European industrial crisis but coming closer to the Spanish model as the deterioration in the situation drags on. The effects of the crisis on employment are connected above all with male unemployment, long and very long-term unemployment and unemployment among people aged over 25. With regard to the impact of poverty, it discerns an association lacking access to stable employment, the problems of the young population and their repercussions for child poverty, particular insecurity for women and, especially, the difficulties of the foreign population. The paper also helps to highlight the regional dimension of the crisis and other factors in exclusion (serious problems associated with questions of loneliness, marginalisation, rejection, personal conflict and so on). Finally, it points out a series of factors to be taken into account by those working in the area of inclusiveness.
