Abstract

The Personal Autonomy Promotion Law (Ley 39/2006, de 14 de diciembre, de Promoción de la Autonomía Personal y Atención a las Personas en Situación de Dependencia) has been recently approved, and Spanish people have set their hope in obtaining a better quality of life for the elderly and for the functionally diverse (disabled) people. Nevertheless, alter analysing the law, as it will be shown, we can only express great concern and disappointment. There's a will to institutionalise, and therefore segregate, functionally diverse people, not fulfilling what is stated by UN Human Rights and European directives. Women rights are also infringed, as they change from «eternal carers» with a «non paid job» to a «precarious job». We, functionally diverse people don't want «care», we want to have the necessary tools (Personal Assistance) in order to be able to «taking care of ourselves», exercising our right to a full citizenship.
