Abstract

Our current society has the duty to respond to the needs of dependent people. This response will be determined, to a large extent, by the rights that we recognize in those people. It seems undeniable that Law 39/2006 for the promotion of personal autonomy and care for people in situations of dependency recognizes attention to them as a subjective right. Nevertheless, it does not seem clear what and whose the obligations corresponding to this right are. This article attempts to reflect on this question upon the basis of one premise: their dignity as people and, therefore, their right to be socially cared for with the same consideration and respect as any other citizen. Based on this premise, it proposes to identify what the moral obligations of the different subjects involved in attention to the needs of dependent people are: the informal network, the professionals, the socio-sanitary managers and the political leaders.
