Abstract
Our intuition told us that the business structure of the Basque Country would be a good laboratory given the links that many Basque companies have historically developed with their environment. Even though this was not literally in line with CSR, it has highlighted the notable insertion of many companies in their social setting. Starting from this unique feature, the reflections and conclusions outlined in this article are based on an in-situ survey conducted among a total of 172 companies in the Basque Country. In addition, in nine out of every ten cases, a personal interview was held with qualified representatives from each company, in order to enlarge on the information gathered in the questionnaires. The general information collection process took place between March and December 2004, as part of a specific project known as Gizartek, and which was the source of the book entitled Responsabilidad Social Corporativa en el País Vasco.
