Abstract

Developed countries have been analysing the "demographic challenge" for more than thirty years. The findings of demographers and their clear implications for the future of social welfare have led a large number of international institutions to take up this issue. This concern by international bodies has enabled highly useful work to be done in the comparison of different welfare systems, looking specifically at recent trends in social security and pensions in particular, as well as the ability of different social security systems to deal with recession. The aim of this work is to analyse how these ideas have evolved at EU level, and more specifically to carry out a critical review of the impact of the proposed reforms on women's pensions, in an attempt to apply the principle of "gender mainstreaming".
