Abstract
Apart from contributory retirement pensions, there are other benefits of the system that play a more important role for elderly women than for men, e.g. widow's pensions and non-contributory disability or retirement benefits. The position of women as recipients of these benefits, the cover and the amounts of benefit provided are marked by their employment records and by the social division of work. In the Spanish case no significant initiatives have yet been implemented to bring the regulation of this matter closer into line with the new social and employment circumstances of women. On the other hand, health care and protection for dependent status must continue to play a major role inoffsetting the current shortfalls in financial benefits.
