Abstract
By focusing on the changes in urban policies as well as on the strategies for urban revitalisation, this paper analyses the reestructuring processes occurred in the metropolitan area of Bilbao during the last two decades. The first section discusses the context of socioeconomic and functional reestructuring of the metropolitan area. The second section deals with the reorientation of urban policies and the formulation of new revitalisation strategies. The third section examines how the new urban policies have been implemented and managed. Finally, the fourth section presents a critical balance of urban regeneration in Bilbao by focusing on the Abandoibarra project, which summarises the new logic of intervention in the city.
