Abstract

The aim of penitentiary treatment is to see that once prisoners have been released they will respect the penal code and will be able to see to own needs. In order to meet this goal it seems that certain gaps in training needs must be overcome if former prisoners are to find employment. However, the reality of prisons today indicates that security, order and discipline, along with the high number of people in prisons, makes it difficult to attain this objective. The alternative is for prisoners, in their first contact with the penal system, as well as later on as remand prisoners and finally as convicted prisoners, to be given the opportunity to take part in integral programmes outside of the prisons themselves, based on broad educational content and practical work experience. This article takes a look at the different training and employment alternatives available in the Basque Autonomous Community, as well as some proposals that may act as an instrument for introducing former prisoners in the job market.
