Abstract

This paper will focus on the principal meanings of Russian cases.

First of all, we would like to highlight the fact that this paper will not cover all the meanings of cases in the Russian language, and that it is targeted mainly at elementary level Russian language students. As such, we will only mention the most important and most used cases.

One question often asked by students is: How do I now which case is required in each sentence? It is not easy to ensure that each verb form agrees with its proper case, which is why this paper outlines the most important meanings of each case, with or without prepositions. The paper also includes lists of principal verbs that students should know by the end of the elementary Russian course.

We hope that the material in this paper will prove useful both for first year Arts Faculty students and anyone interested in learning Russian.
