Abstract

The quantitative and qualitative importance that the Cooperativism have in the socio-economic development of the Basque Country has increased considerably in recent decades. In the specific case of Hego Euskal Herria, at the beginning of the present century the cooperative movement saw a considerable expansion, braked irretrievably with the outbreak in 2008 of the great crisis. Precisely it will be from that date on which we will focus to perform the analysis of the cooperative sector in this article. The article examines the evolution of the main characteristics of the cooperative tissue, such as the type of cooperative, the activity sector, employment, etc. So, the article studies the evolution of the cooperatives in Araba, Bizkaia, Gipuzkoa and Nafarroa for the 2007-2017 periode, focused in the differents regions. The analysis derived from the present work concludes that the cooperative sector of Hego Euskal Herria has been more dynamic and offers better data than the economy in general, in terms of the evolution of entities and employment. On the other hand, it is difficult to establish a direct relationship between resilience to the crisis of a given territory according to greater or lesser presence of cooperativism in its economic structure.
