Abstract

This paper aims to analyze the connection between sports and the social economy. To do so, we examine the organizational structure of sports in Spain and assess the potential for integrating sports federations, clubs, and associations within various frameworks of the social economy.

Following this analysis, we conducted a regional empirical study focusing on the third sector of sports, with an emphasis on cycling in Gipuzkoa. Using a qualitative approach, we conducted semi-structured interviews with six experts on the topic. Our findings suggest that investigating the third sector of sports is essential, as it represents a developing area of research. Additionally, we have affirmed the tripartite organizational structure of sports, even as significant tensions persist among its sectors. By concentrating on cycling in Gipuzkoa, we have identified key issues within the sports organizational framework and propose that incorporating social economy principles and third-sector concepts could help transform the region's sports federations, clubs, and associations.

This article may be of interest to experts in sports and social economy, sports managers within public administrations, and third-sector sports organizations.
