Abstract
The aim of this paper is to reflect on the processes of identity that are formed around and thanks to the waste. Moreover, we shall analyze the identity processes linked to the informal recovery of waste in Buenos Aires, Argentina. We shall expound the tension and ambiguity that mark the identity produced around this activity, well–known in Argentina as "cartoneo". Despite this practice has been broadly spread since the last great financial crisis, it is still socially stigmatized, considered extremely informal and ignored as a legitimate work. We will try to find our way into the difficulties experienced by these workers in order to legitimize themselves in a work clearly outside the cartography of labors accepted by modernity.
