Abstract

This article follows Norbert Elias' sociology and his analysis of civilization as the progress of self-control. I consider advice literature and, more concretely, self-help books as the contemporary equivalent of the books of manners studied by Elias. Whilst these books regulated external behaviour, self-help literature is aimed at producing norms about the subjectivity of contemporary women and men.
