Abstract

The social anthropology of backpacking and tourism has never really concerned itself with the sociological meaning of the practice of backpacking. This article seeks to address that problem by presenting a typology of backpacker experiences, taking into account the meaning that the practice takes on for the individuals who live and narrate such experiences. The meaning that backpackers attribute to backpacking is examined here in terms of the significance it has for the culture of origin of backpackers. Special attention is given to the performance identity mandate and the issue of authenticity.
