Abstract

The different ways in which identity, ethnicity and religion relate to each other feature prominently in the present discussion on sociology and anthropology of religion. However, not much empirical effort has been done in order to show how identity, ethnicity and religion may interact differently within a single social group and geographical area. In this article, we show how two Gitano-charismatic churches vying for hegemony within the evangelical religious field in the city of Madrid display varying patterns of interactions between Pentecostal religion and Gitano identity and ethnicity. Research for the article is based on data gathered from the "Iglesia Evangélica de Filadelfia" and "Centro Cristiano Vino Nuevo el Rey Jesús" churches through ethnographic fieldwork between the years 2012 and 2014. The main thesis advanced in the article is that both churches use Pentecostalism as a means of managing cultural transformation in wider contexts of social transformation.
