Abstract

The debates on the right to marriage and adoption for same-sex couples were highly controversial in France in 2012-2013, more controversial than in Spain seven years before. Among the opponents of the bill, the Catholics appeared as key players. Despite non confessional discourses, the traditional condemnation of homosexuality by the Catholic Magisterium was at that time revived: homosexual behavior is considered as an "objective disorder" and condemned as violation of natural law. The mobilization was a difficult time for gays and lesbians highly integrated Catholics to the Church, with whom I conducted a qualitative sociological survey. The survey shows, however, that they manage to put together these two dimensions of their identity. They get a coaching and even a ritual shaping of their union by a priest.
