“A name that is not the name”. Identity transitions between the sphere of appearance and its reverse

Abstract
The condition of prostitution or sex work is one of permanent transit: between forms of practice, between places of practice and of residence, and particularly between names. That transit is also between names; prostitutes do not usually have one name, but alt least two: the name of their birth certificate, the first name, which is the name of family ties, and the “war name”, which is the one used in the context of prostitution. This last one protects from the stigma of prostitution by hiding the practice, but also the identity. The first should be the name of the sphere of appearance and the second that of its reverse. Based on more or less formal conversations with prostitutes in Spain and Brazil, as well as with some people who provide them with services, I work on these transits proposing that those of name and identity are, at the same time, protectors of oneself and provoke a blurring of the sphere of appearance and its reverse.
