Abstract

This brief text explores the vertiginous dynamics of change of names of those who live in the streets of Montevideo. Those changes of appellatives are linked both to the resolution of territorial conflicts and to linguistic markers resulting from early institutionalization in “sheltered homes” or to non-linear processes of gender change. Some reflections are based on ethnographic teamwork, taking up classical tools of anthropology to understand the change of denomination in diverse cultural contexts, thinking of liminality not as an intermediate state, but as a status in itself that, through successive disaggregations, constitutes living in the street. These notions of liminality and disaggregation are intertwined in a peculiar way with the labels and stigmas of those who break into the public space with their permanence and subsistence practices.
