Abstract

The essay analyses the reception of the cinematographic adaptation of Mitchell's Civil War novel in Spain. First exhibited here, as in other EEuropean countries, eleven years after its production, the movie was not censored. Nevertheless, its underwent a dramatic manipulation as not only it was separated from its historical, geographic and cultural context, as any traded product, but it was also used here to serve locally determined purposes. The essays describes the contents of that appropriation as it aims at showing the effectiveness, even the need, for reception studies within historical reconstructions based upon audio-visual documents.
