Economic Inequality and Political Participation in Spain, 1834-1890

Abstract
This text aims to show that the electoral censuses of the liberal regime between 1835 and 1890 can be an interesting source, not only to study the evolution of political inequality, measured from the right to active suffrage, but also to verify if economic inequality at end of the Old Regime could have suffered some alteration throughout more than half a century of institutional change and economic growth. The evolution of the economic criteria of the electoral census allows us to approach possible changes in the economic stratification of Spanish society. At the same time, it analyzes whether the reduction of political inequality followed the same rhythm and results as the trajectory of wealth inequality.
