Abstract

Around 1968 and 1986 several countercultural communes proliferated in Spain. From the study of primary sources such as underground publications and interviews with their participants, the aim is to explain how these places were spatially conceived. The research shows that the diverse community manifestations of this period (urban, rural, ephemeral, etc.) were crossed by the belief that the human being is a social animal by nature. Under this premise, the communards tried to create alternative spaces to functionalist urbanism where individuals could be free by cooperating with each other.
