Miguel Villanueva in the Dictatorship of Primo de Rivera: Parliamentary Problem and Civil Opposition

Abstract
The main aim of this article is to analyse the role played by the liberal politician Miguel Villanueva y Gómez (1852-1931) in the opposition to Primo de Rivera's dictatorship. Taking into account the context and the anti-democratic rhetoric of the time, we will examine the former minister's statements through the press and other primary sources. The year 1925, in which the Al Hoceima disembarkation took place and the Dictatorship began to be institutionalised, was to be fundamental for the politician and also for his constitutionalist colleagues. The figure of Miguel Villanueva in this stage of Spanish history is crucial, as he was one of the few defenders of the nineteenth-century Spanish parliamentary system and publicly and unambiguously spoke out against the fashion for the presidentialist regime and the National Assembly. The article lists the main acts of civil and public opposition to the regime by the former dynastic politicians.
