Abstract

New developments in economics are rare. The conservative knowledge makes it difficult to introduce new theories. Happiness research has made remarkable progress to develop welfare measurement from the subjective perspective, going beyond the traditional focus on production and income. Subjective well-being and happiness of individuals depends on many factors and employment is revealed as one of the most important. In this paper we offer a review of the relevant literature on the relationship between employment and happiness from both, a quantity and quality perspective. We found that being employed is essential for happiness and mental wellbeing of people. We conclude that public policies must be aimed at achieving high levels of good jobs.
