Abstract

This work analyses the main Corporate Social Responsibility contradictions uncovered in the international activities of the leading Basque Country multinational corporations; BBVA and Iberdrola. The article focuses on the question of whether private capital can make up for social shortcomings. If it is agreed that poverty is a problem of social and economic exclusion, with political roots, the solution must be to transform power relationships in society. Are multinational corporations the most appropriate players to drive this change? Do they not occupy a central position of power in a globalised world? In short, the hidden reality uncovered with the analysis of BBVA and Iberdrola cases, is that we should be speaking of CSR in terms of Corporate Social Irresponsibility with respect to Basque Country multinational companies.
