Abstract

There is a new way of asserting labour rights under globalisation; through public consumer pressure on multinational corporations. The demand for more accountable companies and those with fair trade practices is becoming more widely known, and in some impoverished countries, there are cases in which corporations are linked to activities which attempt to cover up human rights violations. On the other hand, multinational activist groups are new political players and there is a new global stage for protests. However, to understand the benefits of these efforts for working people, these actions would need to be studied to see if they have solved human rights violations and to understand the effects they have had in the countries where manufacturing facilities exist. This article summarises a study of cases made in 2006 in El Salvador and Honduras, which focused on understanding the limits and potentials of efforts to politicise the market and the public consumer to generate fairer conditions for people working in Central America.
