Abstract

The activity of Repsol YPF has had a severe social and environmental impact on Bolivia. It has been the subject of hundreds of accusations over the last fifteen years. In response to the above, the company has adopted a discourse of Corporate Social Responsibility, publicized on television and given the blessing of international auditors with a Gold Class rating. However, its application leaves much to be desired. The company's investment in social projects is minimal in relation to its profits. It is deceptive and assistentialist while, on occasions, it has been used to distribute benefits and to sow division among the indigenous communities. The "nationalization" of hydrocarbons in Bolivia reveals that the "responsibility" of companies is at stake in straightforward but less frequent matters, such as complying with fiscal and labour obligations, repairing the damages they have caused, being transparent and separating the accounts of each country. And submitting to social control. In that land, the pending commitments of Repsol YPF are numerous.
