Abstract
This article analyses first some of the provisions contained in Law no. 4/2005, February 18, on the equality between men and women, which may affect those working for the Basque Public Administration within the Basque Autonomous Community; then, it deals with the difficulties encountered as regards its application and possible interpretations for the sake of strengthening its effectiveness. It draws special attention to the clause about giving priority to women as regards their access to and representation on certain types of work. After the introduction, the article provides a quantitative analysis of how the officials working at the General Administration of the Basque Autonomous Community are distributed by sex and level. Based on the results, it discusses some of the reasons for such an unequal distribution and provides measures for overcoming it. The introduction and data analysis are in Basque, whilst the analysis of the Law is made out in Spanish. The legends within the data boxes are provided in both languages for making them easier to read.
