Abstract
This work examines the changes that are taking place in the workplace with regard to the prolongation of the working life of male and female workers in Western societies. The psychological and psychosocial aspects of health that characterize older workers who are in their last decade of work prior to retirement are examined, together with the specific consequences that the professional and psychosocial profiles of these workers entail both for organisations and for the workers themselves.
Those scenarios in the workplace are described which will become increasingly common in the decades to come, in which there will be an increasing number of workers as a whole in organisations who will be prolonging their working life beyond the age of 65, with the problems and specific potentialities that characterize them. The need to overcome stereotypes associated with ageing in our societies and the specific inter-relation difficulties they give rise to, together with the potential provided by older people, mean that current organisations are going to have to face new challenges for which they will have to be prepared. Lastly, different organisational approaches are referred to which would enable there to be better adjustment, development and productivity among veteran workers on a labour market that comprises a workforce of different ages.
