Abstract

The Law governing the updating, adaptation and modernization of the social security System passed on 21st july 2011, will —despite some partial improvements introduced while it was being processed— constitute a general social step back and widen the gap existing between the living conditions of men and women to the detriment of the latter. The reforms approved do not constitute a response to an unavoidable requirement imposed by a «natural» demographic evolution, but rather, to a political and social option which a priori refuses to review the system's funding and taxation or to promote equality-based policies. Neither do they promote equality-based issues that would be able to influence demographic evolution and the employment rate, or public employment policies, leaving cuts in social security as the sole path being pursued. What is at stake is not the distribution of wealth among the working population and the retired population, but rather, the distribution of wealth and power among normal people and the elites.
