Abstract
The Assessment Centre (AC) is a methodology structured around quantitative and qualitative processes. It examines an individual's capacity to adapt in the workplace and anticipates their likely professional development via the construction of a set of trials and ad hoc situations. In accordance with this aspect, the AC enables us to examine candidates' ratings from the standpoint of competence. Based on these grounds, this work starts with a brief historical study of its evolution by analysing some issues related to the difficulties involved in measuring and analysing data within the context of social science, the meaning of the term competence and, lastly, the development of a model based on competence management. The latter is deemed to be the set of knowledge and skills for the purpose of rating candidates in the workplace. This method therefore makes it easier to understand and improve the selection, training and development processes involved in human resources within complex organisations.
