In this article, the authors reflect on the classic works of children's and youth literature, on their components and defining features, as well as on their origin, both in the case of those considered universal, and those that belong to the Basque literary tradition. Likewise, they weigh the losses and gains that come with some adaptations that have been made of these classics, sometimes with didactic purposes. On the other hand, the authors defend the need to continue teaching these classics in the current school context, on the basis that these works provide, on the one hand, common literary references whose intergenerational transmission is fundamental for the continuity of a community, and, on the other, tools and footholds that allow children and young people to advance in their personal development throughout their lives and in their understanding of the human condition.
