Abstract

This article presents a conceptual review of gender-based violence from a theoretical feminist approach. Starting with a comparison between the legal and media definitions of this term, the study proposes a redefinition of the concept of gender-based violence, bearing in mind the most critical tendencies within feminist theory, in order to provide a more complex analysis of this social problem. It argues that an effective change in the Spanish media's treatment of this problem is needed, given the tendency to reduce the term to acts of aggression by male partners towards their female partners. In addition, it calls for a more in depth conceptualisation of gender-based violence in state legislative texts as well as an international interpretative framework for its definition.
