Abstract

This article is an analysis of the issues in the two main candidates' Twitter official accounts during the Spanish 2011 general elections campaign: @marianorajoy y @conRubalcaba. To that end a quantitative content analysis was applied to every tweet posted in these accounts (2,312 in total). The analysis focuses on identifying, in a comparative way, the campaign issues. The hypothesis of this piece of research -which was confirmed- was that the correspondence between the issues published in Twitter and those considered important by public opinion was imperfect. The social network accounts focused more on self-referential topics.
