Abstract

Traditionally, development discourse has focused on economic growth, considering it the most effective way for impoverished populations to achieve prosperity. Meanwhile, NGDOs, which are also an integral part of the development cooperation sector, have been recognised as providing an alternative form of development; a more humane, participatory, local and sustainable one. This research analyses how these organizations conceive this alternative approach through a case study on Oxfam Intermón. However, this investigation demonstrates that, although this NGDO explicitly proposes a reformation of the prevailing economic system, it still maintains an underlying ideology of approval of the rational and calculating individual, typical of modern western thought.
