Abstract

In this article, we approach the study of overlappings as being functional and integral units throughout any message in the communication process. We present an acoustic analysis of two variables and a reception test of the emotional impact caused by them throughout a sample of films, spots and trailers. The results show that there is a significant correlation between the change in intensity and tone, and the emotional impact on receivers. These data contribute to the formulation of a standardized tipology of overlappings, their parameters of configuration and their emotional effects in fiction. The overlapping serves a specific communication function; specifically, sound is manipulated to meet the objectives of the emiting system, that is, to cause certain effects over the receiving system.
