Abstract

Despite the widespread popularity of cultural studies in Mexico since the early nineties, field research on the degree in which audiences assimilate, negotiate, or reject the preferred meanings of television contents has been scarce. Based on 180 focused interviews with informants from the three largest Mexican cities, the paper explores the critical distancing showed by viewers towards their favorite television programs, according to gender and socioeconomic status. Findings suggest that most of the times, viewers tend to adopt non critical positions towards their favorite fiction contents.
