Abstract

McTV - term that I introduce referring to the Big Brother type of programs - shows current trends of audiovisual McDonalization. The relation with the audience replicates the precarious labor conditions of popular publics and their cuantification for market purposes. McTV creates a macro-genre by recycling previously successful formats. Shortages of investment lead also to overexplotation of contestants. The multimedia symbiotic network that sustains McTV links the old and the new TV channels through new telecommunications in order to share and exploit innovative revenues from the audience. Full commercialization of the public is achieved through a system of market research masked as audience voting. McTV presents the cheapest television contents as «real TV» and it is based on the first market studies paid by the viewers while leaving immediate benefits.
