About the Journal

Focus and Scope

The publishing work of Papeles de Identidad pursues two objectives: delving deeper into the theoretical complexity and empirical diversity of contemporary forms of collective identity; and ensuring a careful, respectful, and rigorous process of selection, discussion, and editing that will contribute to the development of the forms and contents characteristic of academic life.

Papeles de Identidad is a journal that gathers research findings and reflects and encourages the debate on collective identity from the perspective of the social and human sciences. It was founded in 2001 as part of the research program of the Center for Studies on Collective Identity (CEIC/IKI) of the University of the Basque Country / Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea, and in its first period (2001-2006) it focused on gathering the work produced by the team, the permanent research staff, and the guest researchers of the CEIC. In its second period, starting in 2006, the journal has been regularly publishing two issues a year featuring original articles, organized either as single topic issues or under free topic format.

Papeles de Identidad is a publication open to the diversity of perspectives, disciplines, styles, and approaches that characterize the social and human sciences, accepting proposals that reflect the progress in the theoretical and empirical research on which it builds its object, collective identity. The research program of the publishing center serves as a general framework for its editorial decisions and determines its main lines of interest, namely: (1) The social institutions that articulate modern identity and its crisis (politics, religion, work, gender); (2) The social areas of emergent meaning (sociality, culture, youth, gender, migrations, human rights); (3) Identity in the knowledge society (social reflexivity, the material supports of identity, technology…); and (4) Theoretical contributions in sociological studies on collective identity.

Papeles de Identidad is divided into four main sections: Research Articles, Critical Papers, Fundamentals, and Inherited Identity. All texts are evaluated either internally or externally.
