Abstract

There is a large body of research on the role of artists in eliciting dialogue around contemporary social issues and in framing the way we see, think, and act. In this article, we approach the experiences of four women artists, all of them living in Biscay —Saray Pérez Castilla, Mirian Isasi, Olga Ruiz and Argenis Mesa— whose audiovisual work has reflected encounters with immigration and refuge. Through a selection of their projects based on collaborative artistic practices, we analyse their experiences and the most significant elements. The analysis shows that the bond generated during the collaborative process is characterized by five complementary elements: the process itself, flexibility and openness, the exercise of listening, reciprocity or mutual impact, and the occupation and presence of public space. The graphic records of these processes constitute a privileged resource for recognizing alternative narratives.
