Abstract
The legalization of the homosexual marriage puts unions between persons of the same sex on a level with those between heterosexuals. The newly appointed PSOE Government has responded to one of the most important demands of the homosexuals and becomes, at the same time, the awaited prize after years and years of active campaigning. Nevertheless, the approval of the law has been opposed by an important part of Spanish society. This opposition, bringing together the PP, the Church and, especially, by the Spanish Forum of the Family, has hit the headlines and brought to the end a number of separate initiatives, turning it into the main force against the new law both before and after its approval. Besides, the existence of differences among those in favour and those against the law and the dialectical struggle between the two sides, shows that the reason for the conflict and the mobilization cannot be diminished to a simple problem of homophobia: it is related to the existence of deep differences concerning the meaning and implication of terms as "family" and "marriage".
