Abstract
This research, commissioned by Ararteko in the Basque Autonomous Community (CAV), has been carried out among teaching staff in the MIDE department of the University of the Basque Country (Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea) and technicians from the IDEA Institute (Institute of Educational Evaluation and Assessment). Two parts were distinguished within this research: one quantitative and the other qualitative. In the quantitative part a sample of 100 secondary schools in the Basque Country was chosen at random. Information was collected in these centres on the cohabitation situation using questionnaires which were completed by the management, teaching staff, families and students in the two cycles of Obligatory Secondary Education (ESO). This information was analysed with the SPSS computer package. In the second part, a significant sample of 10 centres was chosen based on criteria such as results from the quantitative part, having cohabitation programmes and the percentage of emigrant students. Each centre organised different discussion groups where families, tutors and 2nd and 4th year ESO students could participate. Interviews were also carried out among members of each centre's Management Team. Qualitative information was analysed using the NUD.IST programme. Finally, contrasting the two types of information provided greater knowledge on the cohabitation situation in Basque Country schools.
